Honolulu Museum of Art

OUR CHALLENGE

Hawaii’s premier art institution houses one of the world’s most extensive collections of Asian Art. Delphi was initially hired to replace the Indonesian Gallery casework and display but ended up replacing the casework in all of the Oriental galleries and one of the European galleries for a total of four separate projects over as many years.

HOW WE SOLVED IT

Working from the design direction of George Sexton Associates, Delphi did extensive engineering to produce elegant casework that hid many of the inner workings of the cases. Following the mandate that the museum’s curator be able to access any of the cases by herself, we developed a dozen unique solutions for the various case types. The crowning achievement was a single wall case, 67 feet long, enclosed by seventeen 4-by-10-foot pieces of half-inch-thick glass, each movable by a single person.

WHAT ELSE WE DID

All casework has passive humidity control and all materials were tested for archival suitability by the Getty Museum prior to incorporation.

If you need innovative solutions like this at your museum, or even if you don’t, please contact us. We’d love to talk to you.
